iPort Rail

RAIL

South Yorkshire has an expanding and growing rail sector and supply chain. Our rail cluster has more than 8,000 skilled employees in over 50 companies, with a wide variety of nationalities operating within the region including German, American, Japanese, Swedish, Dutch, Swiss and Australian.

Well-connected with iPort Rail

In 2018, HRH The Princess Royal opened iPort Rail located in South Yorkshire. It is a state-of-the-art multimodal rail terminal which opens the region with road, rail and air connections for national and international freight transport.

Located on a 30-acre site, iPort Rail can accommodate the UK’s longest trains up to six times a day.  Freight services run 6 days a week moving 500 containers a day.

In July 2019, a dedicated rail freight service between Teesport and Doncaster was launched in partnership with GB Railfreight. The twice-daily rail service removes 120 daily road movements from the UK road network – a journey of 90 miles each way per vehicle, reducing CO2 emissions by 76% and increasing sustainability.
