ADVANCED MANUFACTURING INNOVATION DISTRICT (AMID)

The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District (AMID) is the UK’s largest research-led advanced manufacturing cluster.

Built around world-leading university and business collaborations, AMID has attracted investment from companies including McLaren, Boeing, Nikken, Metalysis, PES Performance, MetLase, Iceotope, Rolls-Royce, Dormer, Sandvik, Atkins Global, ITM Power, and PCM.

AMID is home to the University of Sheffield’s world-leading Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), its sister centre, the Nuclear AMRC and its award-winning Apprentice Training Centre.

Momentum within AMID is growing. It’s home to the first Boeing production facility in Europe and three new University of Sheffield research centres. These centres – the Royce Translational Centre (RTC), the Laboratory for Verification and Validation (LVV), and the Integrated Civil and Infrastructure Research Centre (ICAIR) – will use the transformational power of research to cut costs and lead times in order to revolutionise industrial processes.

These developments have contributed to the University of Sheffield being named as the top university in the UK for income and investment in engineering research, according to new data published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

In 2017-18, the University attracted £124 million for engineering research from a range of organisations across the world, throughout the UK and from South Yorkshire. This includes funders such as Innovate UK, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the South Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership, the European Commission and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), as well as investment from industrial partners. Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC), also within AMID, is set to become the most advanced research and development centre for physical activity in the world. Currently under construction, it will act as the research hub for the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine in Sheffield.

In collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, Toshiba, parkrun, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and others, AWRC is poised to make Sheffield City Region a centre of international excellence for health and wellbeing research.
