There are currently 4,000 businesses employing 31,000 people in the digital sector in South Yorkshire. The sector is reported to be worth more than £ 2 billion to the economy. The region has a Digital Infrastructure Strategy Delivery Plan which sets out how we intend to accelerate the development of ‘gigabit capable’ digital infrastructure and 5G networks across the whole of South Yorkshire.
One of South Yorkshire’s key digital assets is the University of Sheffield’s AMRC facility, Factory 2050 – a fully reconfigurable digital factory demonstrator specialising in advanced robotics, flexible automation, next generation man-machine interfaces and new programming and training tools.
Through a focus on Industry 4.0, innovation we are extending our significant assets in the Advanced Manufacturing Industrial District and creating opportunities for specialisation, stronger supply chains, a growing digital community and a specialist digital engineer talent pool.

EdTech / Learning Tech
The EdTech cluster is now well established in South Yorkshire especially in Sheffield, making it a nationally significant hotspot. According to Sheffield Digital, the city’s digital industries association, over 60% of the UK’s digital teaching resources are managed from Sheffield. Researchers Tracxn suggest there are 25 notable EdTech startups in the city, which is fourth in the list of UK cities with the highest number of EdTech HQs (RS Components). 60% of digital school content is made in Sheffield.
