Working with India


India is set to be the third biggest economy in the world by 2030 and is predicted to grow at an average of 5.9% per annum until 2050, making it the most rapidly expanding of all G20 countries.

‘Make in India, Design and Develop in South Yorkshire’ is a strategy we developed back in 2017 as we recognised the huge opportunities for this region’s businesses and Indian companies to collaborate.  Since then, we have continued to build relationships with Indian companies, particularly in the advanced manufacturing sector to push the boundaries of digital efficiency and Industry 4.0.

As the world’s largest democracy, with ambitions towards advanced manufacturing technologies and processes, India is an ideal trading partner for South Yorkshire, for mutual benefit. South Yorkshire’s world leading capabilities in manufacturing, design and development, backed by two internationally renowned academic institutions means there are a wealth of opportunities for collaboration.

Our research-led advanced manufacturing cluster here in South Yorkshire, backed by the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is well developed and is working closely with companies around the world to develop new technologies.

South Yorkshire works in association with the UK Indian Business Council on a number of initiatives designed to build strong relationships with businesses in India. The latest of these is the India Growth Champions Scheme.

In February 2021, we held a virtual roundtable Mayor to Mayor followed by business engagement, led by Sir Nigel Knowles and the Director General, MCCIA, Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture. Read the full article.

A virtual trade mission that ran for six weeks, which was organised by the UK India Business Council in partnership with the South Yorkshire LEP, involving South Yorkshire businesses and companies in Pune in the state of Maharashtra, India, has been hailed a huge success – Read the full article.
